Every year on Dec 17, Kurdistan Regional Flag Day will be celebrated all around the Kurdistan region as a respect and gratitude for the loss of martyr’s life. On this occasion most of the Kurds wear their traditional clothes and the governmental institutions hold national activities.

Students at different levels and ages celebrate the day with their teachers and professors in towns and cities across Kirkuk, Sulaimani, Halabja, Erbil, and Duhok Provinces.

Kurdistan Flag Day has been celebrated annually on December 17 since 2009 when the Kurdistan Region’s parliament designated the day.

The flag of Kurdistan consists of three main colors; red, which is a symbol for the blood loss and sacrifices given by the Kurds to gain freedom, and green which symbolizes the nature of Kurdistan, and white that represents peace in Kurdistan. In the center of the flag there is a sun with 21 rays that depicts the ancient religions of the Kurds.
