The Co-Leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Lahur Talabany, held a meeting on Wednesday with the leaders and officers of the Emergency Defense Forces in Slemani.

In the meeting, PUK Co-Leader pointed to the heroism of this national force and thanked them from the bottom of his heart for their dedication and sacrifice. “These forces were always on the front lines of defense against ISIS, defending the soil and people of Kurdistan with their blood, offering legendary defenses, and giving dozens of martyrs and wounded.” he highlighted.

The Co-Leader discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and explained the policies and plans of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) after the PUK’s fourth party congress. He referred to the achievements after the congress was held, which were achieved due to the awareness of the cadres and leaders of the PUK, the modernization of the party’s different organs, the development of relations with the Kurdish and Iraqi factions, and the strengthening of the PUK’s position in Baghdad. “We emphasized that the PUK is dealing with the current events and developments with a modern strategy in place to consider the highest interests of our people who have faced many challenges.” Lahur Talabany said.

Furthermore, Lahur Talabany pointed to the continuing dangers and stated that the current situation requires for unity among the parties to eliminate these dangers in the Kurdistan Region. “If we are not careful, it will be damaging to our experiences. That is why we must put all our efforts forth to ensure the Peshmerga forces are armed, provided with military training and that their livelihoods are improved. Within this framework, the PUK is encouraging the process of the unification of the Peshmerga forces. Its goal is for the Kurdistan Region to have a strong and systematic force, provided that the balance of power is protected, and its leadership is transparent.” he stated.

He then emphasized the importance of the upcoming elections, explaining that the formation of the Kurdistan Coalition between the PUK and the Gorran Movement is a brave step for both sides to create peace, put an end to the political conflicts, achieve national unity and strengthen the Kurdish voice in Baghdad. “Through this path, with the constitution, and through parliamentary struggle we will achieve the Kurdish people’s rights and ensure the salaries of the civil servants and our financial shares.” he added.
