Iraqi President Meets UNAMI Chief: Optimal Condition for Secure and Transparent Vote Must Be Ensured

On Monday, July 19, 2021, the President of the Republic of Iraq, Barham Salih met with Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). The meeting was held at Baghdad Palace.

The importance of upcoming elections and the need to create right conditions for a secure and transparent vote were discussed during the meeting.

President Salih and UN Special Representative Plasschaert agreed that elections must be fair and free and there should be no fraud or electoral manipulation in all its stages.

Therefore, elections' results will, inevitably, have more credibility and it will also reflect the free will of the Iraqi people in choosing their representatives without having the fear of pressure, or fear of fraud or other irregularities that could play a role in the outcome of the elections, both sides said.

Meeting Participants spoke about how important it was to promote security and stability in Iraq as it is an integral part of securing elections.
