On Sunday June 23, 2019, deputy Prime Minister of Kurdistan Region, Mr. Qubad Talabani, received Mr. Karim A. A. Khan, the Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by ISIS.
In the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Kurdistan Region and UNITAD.
“Kutrdistan Region will help the UNITAD and its teams with full efforts so as to obtain a deserved penalty for the ISIS members, and to return value and prestige to those suffered under the hands of ISIS” Talabani pointed out.
On the other hand, Qubad Talabani asked the Khan to train and aid the investigative judges and Kurdistan Region’s magistrates in preceding the cases of genocide.
Furthermore, both sides addressed the post-war psychological effects of the victims, for which they agreed treating the psychological status of those victims are as much important as rebuilding the war-torn areas.
The United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by ISIS in Iraq (UNITAD) was founded on December 21, 2017, pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution No. 2379, in a bid to investigate the crimes committed by ISIS, mainly those that involve war crimes, crimes against humanity and massacre.
